We will tour the amazing and diverse community of buildings which Johnson and Johnson Industries built for the mill workers and their families, all within walking distance of the mill. They were constructed in 1927 in innovative designs which radically changed how mill communities were designed and developed afterwards.
Originally the new village included a company store and market, two churches, a community center, a gymnasium, parks with tennis courts and public swimming pool, concrete sidewalks with lampposts, 217 single family brick bungalow houses each with private yards, buried power lines, indoor plumbing for kitchens and bathrooms, fireplaces, screened windows, etc.
Many of these remain today in good condition. Some of the homes have descendants of the mill workers. It is a Live/Work/Play/Worship community.
Across the highway from the village stands the cutting edge architecture of the mill structures, onsite power plant, and the renovated administration building which houses the brewery.
